My name is Aashish Gurung, and I arrived in Australia in July 2023. Everything was new—the environment, the culture, and the people. Back in Nepal, attending church every week was an essential part of my life. As I prepared for my journey to Australia, one of my biggest concerns was how different it would feel to worship in an English-speaking church. While I am comfortable with English services, I knew it would not be the same as worshipping in my native language with fellow Nepalese believers.
To my joy and surprise, I soon discovered a Nepalese church in Brisbane—Brisbane Mahimit Mandali (BMM). The moment I found out, I felt a deep sense of excitement and relief. However, there was a stark contrast between my experiences in Nepal and here. Back home, I was accustomed to attending services with thousands of worshippers, whereas in Brisbane, the congregation was much smaller, with just 15 to 20 people. Despite the difference in size, the warmth and sense of belonging I experienced at BMM were truly overwhelming.
From the very beginning, the church played a crucial role in helping me settle in. They welcomed me with open arms, even picking me up from the airport upon my arrival. The sermons in Nepali felt like a piece of home, bridging the gap between my past and present. Now, the church has also begun translating sermons into English, making the Word of God accessible to non-Nepalese attendees and creating a more inclusive worship experience.
Being an international student comes with its own set of challenges—balancing work, studies, and assignments can be overwhelming. However, Brisbane Mahimit Mandali has provided not only spiritual nourishment but also a strong, supportive community. Beyond worship services, the church organizes activities such as futsal, dance classes, and music lessons, offering a space to unwind and connect with others.
Since the day I arrived in Brisbane, this church has felt like home. It has guided me through important decisions, provided unwavering support, and introduced me to some of the most welcoming and kind-hearted people. The sense of belonging I have found here is truly special, making my transition to a new country much easier.
For anyone seeking a home away from home, I can confidently say that Brisbane Mahimit Mandali is more than just a place of worship—it is a family. If you are new to Brisbane and looking for a supportive faith community, I encourage you to visit. You may just find the home you’ve been searching for.
